Valencia are awaiting a fax from Portsmouth to confirm a loan deal for Manuel Fernandes until the end of the season....
The Portuguese international had travelled to Milan to undergo a medical with a view to signing for Inter, but it was claimed that he failed to pass the stringent examinations. However, Valencia insist that Fernandes is fit to play.
Fernandes has previously played for both Everton and Portsmouth in the Premier League before signing for Valencia in August 2007, but has recently lost his place at the Mestalla with Ever Banega, Marchena and Albelda currently preferred. He lacks the tactical discipline necessary for La Liga, but his strength and stamina make him well suited to Premier League football.
English football authorities recently lifted the transfer embargo imposed on Portsmouth in October but have limited the club`s dealing to loans and free signings until the window closes today. Other clubs have enquired about Fernandes over the past few days, but at the moment, Portsmouth appear favourites (although given the frenzied nature of activity during the final hours of the transfer window, nothing should be considered a foregone conclusion!)
