Several readers have been in touch, asking if we have any information regarding the press reports on Sunday claiming that Javier Mascherano had agreed a deal with FC Barcelona....
It was reported that Mascherano`s agent had been in Spain to discuss a possible transfer to FC Barcelona – with some papers claiming that a January transfer, including personal terms had already been agreed .
However, despite a degree of ambiguity, sources close to the player have told me that this is not the case and that “Mascherano won`t be leaving Liverpool, not unless something changes in the next few weeks.”
Conversations did take place between Barcelona and Liverpool in the summer regarding the Spanish club`s interest in the Argentine midfielder, but no formal bid was forthcoming.
Rafa Benitez had no intention of selling Mascherano at that time, particularly with Xabi Alonso`s future at Anfield hanging in the balance. It could be said that the relationship between Benitez and Mascherano has not been at its best since then – and Liverpool`s results at the start of this season have not helped matters: with the player clearly drawn to the possibility of playing at the Camp Nou.
However, Benitez will not allow a pivotal first team player, like Mascherano, to leave in the January transfer window.
